<image:title>Events - Robert Returns</image:title>
<image:caption>ROBERT RETURNS, the long-awaited (actually totally unexpected) sequel to The Songs of Robert, the verse play with music that launched The Magnetic Theatre in 2008, won a Judges’ Award for Best Solo Performance at the New York International Fringe Festival in 2009, and inaugurated the artistic collaboration between John Crutchfield and Steve Samuels that continues today as The Sublime Theater & Press. After a two-year hiatus due to the Covid pandemic, The Sublime Theater re-emerged in September 2022 with the world premier of Robert Returns. Like its predecessor, the show is a verse play with original music, performed by a single actor embodying over a dozen characters. This time, however, “Robert” is no longer a teenager on the brink of setting out into the world, but a grown man returning to his hometown in Southern Appalachia after the death of his friend and mentor, “Ol’ Preacha’”. There, he reconnects with old acquaintances, takes stock of how his hometown has changed, and discovers a family secret that alters his entire view of himself and his place in the world. By turns humorous, gripping, and just plain weird, the play was extremely well received in its first run at the BeBe Theatre in downtown Asheville, and went on to additional performances in 2023 at Story Parlor in West Asheville, at All Souls Cathedral in Biltmore, and at Neighborhood Yoga in Boone, North Carolina. In the words of one audience member, “John is a flawless performer, and the material was solid, engaging, impassioned, enthralling, the performance (a one-man show) totally without a glitch. The tiny black-box in the midst of a teeming metropolis reminded me of all the best nights of theater I’ve had in Dublin, London, wherever, when some miraculous thing unfolded before me somehow hidden from the scrutiny of the many.” Directed by Steve Samuels and starring John Crutchfield, with design, technical assistance, and stage management by Olivia Stuller.</image:caption>

<image:title>Events - Robert Returns…to Berlin!</image:title>
<image:caption>On June 16th, 2024, The Sublime Theater will present its production of John Crutchfield’s one-man-show Robert Returns at the cabaret theatre, “Zimmer 16,” at Florastraße 16 in Berlin-Pankow. After a premier and successful run in the United States in 2022 and 2023, Robert Returns will receive its European premier this summer in Berlin. John Crutchfield’s latest one-man-show – a verse play with original live music – is the sequel to his celebrated The Songs of Robert, which won a Judges Award for Outstanding Solo Performance at the 2009 New York International Fringe Festival. Like the original, the sequel is directed by Steven Samuels and features Crutchfield in over a dozen roles as well as singing and playing original songs on guitar and banjo. The play tells the story of a middle-aged man who returns to his hometown in Southern Appalachia after being named in a mysterious last-will-and-testament. There he encounters old classmates and friends, confronts a hometown changed beyond recognition, and discovers a family secret that alters his understanding of himself and his place in the world. No knowledge of the prequel is necessary to enjoy this by turns hilarious, strange, and moving show. The performance will start at 8pm sharp (20:00), and will last approximately 75 minutes. Tickets are 10€/5€. Seating is limited. To order tickets, click here.</image:caption>

Part memoir, part cultural anthropology, part eulogy for a particular cafe, on Gutenberg Square in Karlsruhe, Germany, that for a brief time offered the author a space to love. <image:title>Events - Still Life</image:title>
<image:caption>On April 4, 2022, John Crutchfield’s personal essay “Still Life: Toward a Remembrance of Elliott Paul Orr” appeared in the online journal berfrois. Exactly twenty years earlier, on April 4, 2022, Elliott Paul Orr – a brilliant young sculptor and close personal friend from Governor’s School West 1987 – took his own life. For many years thereafter, John worked on what was imagined as a tribute to his friend, a book-length collage of poems, photographs, diary entries, letters, philosophical explorations, and research materials on suicide, as well as interviews with Elliott’s surviving family and friends, and effluvia from his daily life. Somehow these materials dispersed themselves into various other forms: a collection of poems (Yearbook, still unpublished), a dance performance (“Seven Glimpses”), and two full-length plays (The Labyrinth and Solstice). For the 20th Anniversary of Elliott’s death, however, John assembled a series of prose fragments into an essay intended to gesture toward the book that has not yet been written, and may never be. Testimonials: "John Crutchfield ist ein hervorragender Korrekturleser und Übersetzer vom Deutschen ins Englische. Ich würde ihn jederzeit wieder engagieren und empfehle ihn wärmstens." – Dr. Kai Wiegandt, Heisenberg Professor of Literature, Barenboim-Said Akademie, Berlin, Germany "In 2010, John Crutchfield provided me with an English translation of Willhelm Friedrich Gotter's Die Geisterinsel from 1797 and later, in 2016, with an English translation of Vincenz Hundhausen's 1926 German translation from the Chinese of Wang Sche-fu's Das Westzimmer. In both instances, Crutchfield's translations were methodically clear and concise while still retaining the poetic flavor of the original text. Furthermore, he produced the translations well before our agreed deadlines. I highly recommend John Crutchfield as a translator from German to English, particularly for literary works." – Dr. Ming Tsao, Composer and Professor of Music Composition, University of Goteburg, Sweden</image:caption>
